Settling In...

I think it's the return to routine and structure that felt so good when I woke up this morning.  Everyone seems to be settling in.  You can just feel it.  And, it's nice.

It reminds me of how important it is for children to feel this too.  It's our responsibility to establish daily routines and structure in order to create an environment where they feel safe and supported.

Now, sometimes those words get a bad rap (we think controlling, authoritative or boring).  That does not have to be the case though.

In fact, when a predictable, consistent and positive environment is created, kids become their most creative selves, step out of their comfort zone, take risks and feel empowered.

As an elementary school teacher for six years, creating this type of environment was no easy task.  And parents, I know it can be even harder at home.  However, I do know, once boundaries are set and children know what to expect, things go much smoother.  It doesn't mean it will be perfect (and it definitely won't happen overnight), but behaviors and relationships will most likely improve.  And even better, once this groundwork is laid, children become more independent, confident and begin to develop self-discipline.

How does the B&L curriculum create safe and inviting spaces for teaching and learning?  Here are a few ways...

So, now the question becomes...

What routines and structures are you creating for yourself, your child, family and/or students this school year?

If you're still exploring this and curious about learning more, here are three great resources:

One of my all-time favorites, which is a bit teacher-ish, but full of valuable info for all,  Kids 1st From Day 1One for teachers, Responsive ClassroomOne I'm currently listening to on Audible, which is more for parents, The Awakened Family

I'll be taking a closer look at my routines this week too, so stay tuned on IG... and please share yours with me too!

The school year is here, let's settle into those feel good routines together.

My First Time Skiing

Embarrassed.  Excited.  Cautious.  Clumsy. Nervous. Just a few of the emotions I felt as I attempted to walk in my skis across the snow and conquer the bunny hill.  I skied once in fourth grade and ha
