I think it's the return to routine and structure that felt so good when I woke up this morning. Everyone seems to be settling in. You can just feel it. And, it's nice.
It reminds me of how important it is for children to feel this too. It's our responsibility to establish daily routines and structure in order to create an environment where they feel safe and supported.
Now, sometimes those words get a bad rap (we think controlling, authoritative or boring). That does not have to be the case though.
In fact, when a predictable, consistent and positive environment is created, kids become their most creative selves, step out of their comfort zone, take risks and feel empowered.
As an elementary school teacher for six years, creating this type of environment was no easy task. And parents, I know it can be even harder at home. However, I do know, once boundaries are set and children know what to expect, things go much smoother. It doesn't mean it will be perfect (and it definitely won't happen overnight), but behaviors and relationships will most likely improve. And even better, once this groundwork is laid, children become more independent, confident and begin to develop self-discipline.
